The historic town of Mostar developed in the 15th and 16th centuries as an Ottoman frontier town and during the Austro-Hungarian period in the 19th and 20th centuries. Mostar has long been known for its old Turkish houses and Old Bridge after which it is named. In the 1990s conflict, however, most of the historic town and the Old Bridge was destroyed. The Old Bridge was recently rebuilt with the contribution of an international scientific committee established by UNESCO.
Medjugorje (“Between the Hills”) is a village in the southern part of Herzegovina. The small parish of about 4,000 has become famous due to a series of reported visions of the Virgin Mary that began in 1981 and still continue today.
Although the apparitions have not been validated by the Catholic Church and therefore official pilgrimages are not allowed, the Shrine of the Queen of Peace at Medjugorje attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year.
